Following the Brush: Memoiric Zuihitsu

“Following the Brush: Memoiric Zuihitsu” is a hybrid-poetry workshop that will introduce you to “zuihitsu,” (translated as “following the brush”) a storied, but rarely instructed Japanese form, composed largely of interwoven writings in prose and poetry on ideas or subjects that typically respond to the author’s surroundings. The form incorporates nonfiction, musings and confessions, poetry, and miscellany to create a spontaneous, layered text. In this workshop we will handle with care the intricacies of ourselves, our memory, and our inner and outer worlds through this sprawling, expansive form.

Ekphrastic Poetry: Writing on Self-Artifacts

Ekphrasis means “description” in Greek, and is defined as a vivid, often dramatic, verbal description of a visual work of art, either real or imagined. Ekphrastic poetry is a long-standing literary tradition. Today, an ekphrastic poem can traverse many mediums, from painting to sculpture, to photography and film. There is no limit to your artist’s eye. In this workshop you will be introduced to ekphrastic poetry and encouraged to bring art-like artifacts from your life to class. You will narrate, reflect, and bring new eyes and meaning to your object and its memory. In this workshop you will explore art and artifact, and your complex relation to the world around you, especially objects and memories of significance.
